Mentorship Creates the Future

Mentorship Creates the Future

In 2008 I was an employee of a company, and I was just an 18-year-old boy. In this company, the HR department frequently opened internal recruitments looking to relocate people from other areas internally.

In that year, I was studying in the second semester of my course Systems Analysis and Development and the HR team opened a position for IT, and I applied.

With a little of luck, I did well on the test and the amazing position was mine. GREAT!!

I had never worked in IT before, and it was very difficult to me in first year. Every day I felt that I didn’t have the required skills or that position wasn’t for me. 😥

But, I had an incredible mentor who was a game-changer in my career.

For this reason, in this post I’ll show you three reasons I truly believe mentoring juniors and interns is beneficial.

1) The Importance of Mentorship

So, every senior professional was once a junior. Does that make sense? Mentoring juniors will formally develop them into professionals Mentoring early professionals makes the process faster, and is incredibly rewarding for both those who teach and those who learn.

Full Recap:

  • Former professional faster
  • Rewarding for mentor and learner

2) When Is the Right Time to Hire Interns and Juniors?

Perhaps there isn’t a single ‘great’ moment, but the team should be open-minded for this. An intern or junior person, requires a significant amount of a senior’s and mid-level’s time. This time is crucial for coaching and providing excellent feedback.

3) How Expensive Is It to Train a New Professional?

Wow! It’s very expensive, for sure. not in direct cash outlay, but in time spent. In the first year, your team’s performance will likely decrease because the intern needs a lot of special attention.

Some ideas to facilitate this process:

  • Create an onboarding process for trainees
  • Set a senior sponsor for each trainee
  • Create individual plans for each trinee, with periodic review and feedback

In conclusion, I really encourage you to create a culture of teaching and sharing. It’s amazing for you, your company, and it helps create a better world.
